On the cards
Her designs - inspired by Art Deco and Art Nouveau - have a jewel-like quality and make a wonderful keepsake for guests to remember a couple's Big Day. Athanasia, 33, arrived in Britain from Greece five years ago and, after receiving lots of encouragement from her friends and family, she decided to turn her hobby of making personalised greetings cards into a business. "Many of my friends either asked to buy cards, or commissioned me to make unique personalised designs for them," said Athanasia. "This made me think that I could turn something that I enjoyed doing in my spare time into a full-time career." With no knowledge of business, Athanasia was helped by the Ethnic Minority Business Service in Oxford, which gave her training followed by one-to-one business counselling. "They were very friendly and encouraging and my business, Cards Deco, was born," said Athanasia. She has been up and running from a workshop at the Canal Street Studios in Jericho, Oxford, for a year and her cards are sold through several shops in the city. Her wedding stationery is being particularly admired. "I want my wedding stationery to be a beautiful keepsake," said Athanasia, who is currently developing new designs. She can provide invitations, orders of service, place cards Ñ and anything else the bride and groom may need. She added: "I believe I provide a unique service to my customers and I hope that they enjoy the process from the first meeting through to the wedding day itself."
