Little angels
Weddings are usually family occasions but will allowing children to attend make your day a dream, or a nightmare? Sam Pope weighs up the pros and cons
Everyone goes gooey at the sight of little children in wedding gear. Floaty princess dresses on girls and delightful tiny suits or kilts on boys enchant the guests and look fantastic in the wedding album.
However, tantrums and tiredness often form part of a day in the life of a small child - and some bigger children too Ñ so do you really want to exchange your vows against a backdrop of a tot shouting: "I want to go to the toilet, mummy!"? A recent poll on www.babyworld.co.uk showed interesting results.
It seemed only fair that parents nationwide would be outraged at not having their children welcome at a wedding but, in fact, a massive two-thirds said they were happy to go along with whatever the bride and groom wanted.
If you have not yet decided whether to allow children at your wedding, here are a few things to consider which may tip the balance.
* How long is your guest list? Is there room for children, or will you have to exclude a close friend to accommodate your cousin's toddler? * What time is the ceremony and reception? Morning and afternoon ceremonies and receptions are often best to avoid over-tiredness. * How big is the venue for the ceremony? Small, intimate places can feel very claustrophobic when a baby or toddler is having a bad day. * Wherever you choose, ask the ushers to seat parents with small children at the back and on aisle seats, so they can make a quick escape if necessary. * Is the venue child-friendly? There is no point inviting children to a place packed with antiques and priceless glassware. * Choose somewhere with enough outside space for letting off steam and ask if there are any smaller, quiet rooms where parents can put their children to nap when they get tired. * How big is your budget? Children do not really incur any extra cost unless you are willing to splash out on a mobile cr?che, or nanny service to look after the kids while the adults have some fun!
